My tv supports up through 1080i, has 1 HDMI slot and 2 Component slots. Currently I have the HDMI slot being used by my DVD player, 1 of the Components by the PS2, and 1 by the Comcast box.
If and when I get my PS3, will I notice any difference plugging it into the HDMI port or the Component port? My plan was to just climb behind the tv when I needed to and swap the HDMI plugs for whatever device I was using, since I really didn't want to fork over 100$ for an HDMI switcher. BUT, if with 1080i I won't notice any difference in picture using component I can just use the slot I'll free up from the ps2. I was going to use optical to my reciever.
SO, go with the HDMI, stick with Component, or get a new tv with 1080p and more HDMI slots? :P

from what ive heard HDMI kicks component squarely in the stomach(while component is pregnant mind you) rly hard. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. basically theyre high def cables meant for high def products. its teh future! they are sorta exspensive tho haha. the ones i saw in the store were $80 but ppl swore by them motherfuckers. pretty sure you can find em cheaper too.

also if you get a ps3 you wont rly need your dvd player REALLY. so you would have a free HDMI slot and component.

I've been worried about making the PS3 my primary drive. I'll put plenty of hours on it from the gaming, add to it movies.
but then again, it is blu-ray, UGH.
We'll see. I'll just play around with it and go from there. If I take the DVD player out of the loop I'll already have an HDMI and Optical cable then :P

The difference between HDMI and Component video is actually pretty negligible unless you are going to run at 1080p, in which case you need HDMI.
I wouldn't go through any extra effort to ensure the connection is HDMI, one thing to keep in mind is that the PS3 is an excellent upscaling DVD player ... not to mention the Blu-ray capabilities ... so there is a good chance that DVDs will look better on your PS3 than they will on your DVD player.
The only real catch to using the PS3 as your DVD player is that Sony didn't include an IR port on the PS3, so you can't use any universal remotes or anything like that with the PS3 (without rigging up an excessively complicated solution). You can still use the PS3's Bluetooth DVD remote though.

personally i like the ps controllers as dvd remotes Q_Q dvd remotes are just another thing to loose sumwhere in the house.

So far the sales pitch to Jess is working well. One thing I'm trying to get her on is the Internet Ability. We've wanted a new computer for awhile since the one that I am one SUCKS ASS. If the PS3 has a pretty good working Browser then I think that'll be the Icing.
we'll need to get some accessaries, probably wireless USB mouse/keyboard, gonna want to upgrade my wireless router finally to 802 g since this one has problems and is ancient.
Lef have you used it for the internet much? can you like print stuff, download programs, browse this website? lol.
Major issue I'm going to have with buying a ps3 is how it'll break into my ffxi time. This probably means I'm going to have to buy the FULL version minus hard-drive and install in on ps3. Moving from computer to console with this game will be akward to say the least.

The PS3 doesn't upscale DVD's as far as I know... until they update the firmware this March. If you aren't using a upscaling DVD player just use the PS3 as the DVD player... if not the difference between 1080i on HDMI or Component is not really anything to worry about. I actually use a HDMI > DVI cable to do 1080p on my 42" Westinghouse and the picture is perfect o_o-b Also does anyone know if I install FFXI on my XBOX360 can I get those achievments by logging onto my account on my XBOX and talking to a npc or something? Would like to know before the 31st <_< Easy ~300 achievment points if its that easy...

the browser is pretty decent. i tried to watch stuff that required flash but it said i had to dl flash player. im not sure if itll work i nvr tried it. the pages arent too big either the browser compresses web pages to fit your screen. i guess if you had like a 50" tv screen it wouldnt be an issue but im playing this on a 13" screen. sum things are sort of strange too like. web pages that have stuff you can scroll down along with the actual page itself didnt work all the time. theyll prolly release updates and patches to add stuff to the browser since all of this is pretty upgradeable. if all you wanna do is check email n shit itll prolly do you fine. btw i posted this reply from the ps3 browser just to see how well it would work. it worked pretty nicely. if you wanted to play ffxi on the ps3 your gonna have a very hard time trying to find the original ffxi/rise of zilart disc. i dont even think square-enix sells the HDD combo set anymore. they only go as far back as cop on their online store.

The title bard NPC in Whitegate has an option to unlock achievements if you are logged in via the 360. He's by the gate to Al Zhabi. For all I know, all of the title bards have this ability, but I don't really know for sure.

By just doing some stuff in games and they go on your account for everyone to see. Like you might get 20 points for killing 100 terrorists or 30 points for winning a online ranked match. In FFXI you get points for having 75 jobs, completed stoylines, rank, relic weapon, and some other stuff... I can get a easy ~300 points if I just log onto my account I think heh but I think you have to talk to some npc to get them... but I can't find any info on it and I don't want to reactivate my account if I can't do it before the time runs up on it.

ooooh, i gotcha
The PS3 web browser kind of sucks compared to any PC. But you can like watch Youtube videos on PS3 I try it on mine the other day.
I pluged in my PS3 with the Component cables I had for my PS2 and it worked well. The only problem I have is i have to unplug my xbox360 or ps3 from the TV every time I want to play the other one since my TV only has 1 set of component inputs. Unless your TV has 1080p you really don't need to have PS3 plugged in a HDMI anyway. Also the PS3 will play both DVDs and BluRay movies so you don't have to worry about it not playing DVDs.

I was wondering about this. Once you get the game on the Hard-drive do you still need a disc in to play it or does it run the whole thing from the drive. If that were the case if I can find someone with the install discs I could just install and ship the discs back since I don't need a content ID. Even if it were something like needing ToAU in that's easy enough to find these days.
Tyler you play on PS2? give me your discs!

yea all you need is the playonline disc and the ffxi disc. getting it from sum1 else is probably your only way to get it. ebay might work too i guess.

Just checked ebay, all they got so far is the FFXI +HDD and then ToAU, no zilart or CoP.
Guess the best option would be to borrow the discs from someone when I get the ps3. Just a matter of finding someone who will let me borrow them for a bit while I install.

the person i know on campus is nirokun btw, so if using his discs inexplicably turns you into a rampant homosexual, i apologize.
I have all the PS2 discs POL disc, FFXI+ROZ, CoP, and ToAU. Which you don't even need the discs after you install them on your PS3. But I don't really want to sell them cause I did reinstall FFXI with them times.
I could make a copy of them but I am not sure that it would work.

Yes, you can just log on and get your achievements. First thing i did when i installed ffxi on my 360 was go to the bard and activate achievement for 75monk and rank 10 windy.
Edit: i am not sure if it is all the bards or what, but i talked to the one in the port in Bastok, down by the water. iirc.

Ahh good thing I looked at this post. I'm gona look for a PS3 next week, and was gona buy the HDMI cable... but my TV is only 1080i also, so I guess there is no need? I've had some Monster Component for my PS2 for a few years and they still work. I guess I saved 100 bucks... I have 2 HDMI holes (lol :P holes) on my TV, and dont have anything hooked up to them.

If you have the option available, I'd spend the $20 to get a HDMI cable. It's going to look slightly better. The difference is small enough that I just wouldn't bother if it is a major inconvenience like it would be in Scytale's case.
By the way, go for the cheapest HDMI cable you can find. The nice thing about digital signals is that the quality of the cable means very very little. It will either work or it won't, but you won't observe any quality differences using a $20 generic cable vs. a $150 ubar Monster Cable.

Ahh cool thx. I'll probably get the HDMI cable then. The one I was gona get was the $100 Monster one, but I'll probably get something cheaper now.

I use DVI and HDMI outputing 1080i onto my 92" screen playing 1920x1080. The cables I got are way cheaper than monster cables overpriced crap. Check these out http://www.monoprice.com/products/department.asp?c_id=102 .I got the HDMI-DVI hooked up to the computer for games and dvd upscale playback and HDMI-HDMI for future HD cable.

Ah cool site. I think I'm going to get a HDMI-DVI, and HDMI-HDMI Cable. Might as well get them both now, they are pritty cheap on this site. Thx.
EDIT: These are the ones I'm gona get. Also I'm a little confused with the 24AWG, and other ones. I should just get a 28AWG right? I mean 24 is only relly better if the calbe is longer? I dont need one longer than 10ft for my PS3 to TV, but I do need at least 15ft one for my PC since its not so close.
