The History of BurningCosmossss - 2 Years Old!! (Wrong, 3! (Holy crap, 4!))

That's right folks! Our proud and illustrious linkshell hit 2 years old this past week!

This is kind of going to be my own ramblings about how the linkshell came to be. There will be lots of stories from my point of view, and I warn you, it may be boring to some people!! However, others I am sure will find this to be fascinating, and to them I hope they enjoy this thread!! Also, anyone with stories or pictures of the linkshell over the past two years are more than welcome to share them!!

CHAPTER 1 - THE FORMATION

We have had a lot happen to us the past two years. We have many people here new to the linkshell! They deserve to know how the linkshell was formed, and how it came to become the most accomplished English speaking linkshell on the Phoenix server!!

To begin the story of BC, we must tell the story of Mogophiles, the proud purple linkshell!! Many of you have probably never heard of Mogophiles before, but you probably have seen several Mogo pearls wander by in the past. Mogophiles was started by a player named Coraan (also known as Joe, you can occasionally see him playing on Orochinagi these days) late December, 2003. He is a high school buddy of mine, and we decided we wanted to play the game together under our own linkshell. From there I invited Harmonia and Carmisse to the game to join the linkshell as well as a few others, we were a small group of friends who knew each other on the internet before playing the game. Kasin also joined the linkshell as Fatcat, which he later scrapped to remake into Peachfuzz because he didn't like being an Elvaan.

Over the years we developed a static party to level to 75. It was the best static party ever, and consisted of RDM (Carmisse), WHM (Harmonia), PLD (Rayj), DRG (Freja), DRK (Coraan), and THF (Peachfuzz).

As we approached 75, we began thinking of our HNM carreers. We refused to be separated, but knew that no HNM linkshell out there was likely to invite all 6 of us at once. By this time, two former WildSeven members quit that linkshell and joined Mogophiles to play with us. Those two were Twizz and Shizune. Peachfuzz has also leveled his NIN to 75 in the meantime, and joined Genesis because we couldn't kill the NMs he wanted to fight at our lower levels.

Shizune told us about a friend of his from his old HNMing days that was starting a Taiwanese HNM linkshell, and they were looking to recruit. The night we all hit level 69 on our static (during late November, 2004), there was a sky run tryout for that linkshell. The shell name was called Mission, but they were going to rename it after officially remaking it on January 1st, 2005.

That night's sky run was the craziest thing I have ever seen up until that point in the game. In retrospec it was a horrible run. We had nearly 40 people show up, I believe. Each god was fought by rotating melees in and out to spirits within, or SATA weapon skill, then dropping again. Each god took nearly 10 minutes to kill, if I remember. It was total chaos, but I fell in love with the HNM world that night. What was great was that Mission was going to invite all of us to their NA branch of the linkshell. We could stay together!

The next month or so, we made it our purpose to get the static up to level 75 so we could contribute well to the HNM linkshell. Once January 1st rolled around, though, we heard nothing. We weren't sure if they forgot about us, or if they simply changed their minds about bringing in NA players. However, some of us were mad at being overlooked like that.

It was then that we began to toy around with the idea of making our own HNM linkshell. What if it could be done? All we wanted was to do sky events, really. We began our forray into the HNM world officially by starting with camping Simurgh! Our main competition at the time was Genesis, as gilsellers haven't really begun to monopolize HNMs yet. We camped it for a little bit over a week, dominating the majority of the pulls. We also got 2 strider boots to drop, and gave one to Shizune and one to Twizz!! Although we did camp under the Mogophiles banner, it was at this time that our dreams to create our own linkshell really began to build momentum, due to our massive Simurgh success!! We really began to grow in our own confidence.

This has become a theme for our linkshell. If there's one thing we've always had an abundance of in the past, it was confidence!

Harmonia was going to be the sackholder of the new linkshell, with myself, Carmisse, Shizune, and Twizz being the other leaders.

So we began to talk about what we were going to name our linkshell. Some notable suggestions included "LessThanThree", "RockSalt", "MongolianChopSquad", and "OpoOpoMonkeyClan". Back then Shizune liked to talk about some really cheesy anime called Saint Seiya, which included a line some character would say while powering up or something. He made this line into his weapon skill macro, so whenever he did a WS we would see in party chat "Is Your Cosmos Burning?? Q_Q" We decided to be fools and use that as our linkshell name in the end, being BurningCosmos. However, for some strange reason, the name BurningCosmos has already been taken. So Harmonia named it BurningCosmosss, because BurningCosmoss just looked like a typo. The third s gave it attitude!!

Thus our linkshell was created and named during the last week of January! Our first unofficial camp under the BC banner was one of our last Simurgh camps ever. We decided to break out the new pearl to give our comeptition a taste of what was to come!!

I remember discussing what we were going to do about getting more members. It was obvious that Mogophiles alone wasn't going to have enough people to support an entire HNM linkshell. Mogophiles was a social shell after all, and a good portion of the ls was still far too underleveled to take part in end game. We did however have a good number of Mogophiles people come over. Harmonia, Freja, Carmisse, Coraan, Juma, Rayj, Shizune, Twizz, Shiromori, and Slyvar to name a few.

So we began scouting around. I started first by reaching out to my friends over at the CrazyEightyEight linkshell, where I was friends with Beorn and Lefiel. Through them we got some of our best members: Lefiel, Beorn, Bartuc, Ayther, Tyree, Rafride, and Claymoore, though we did have to beg Clay to join us.

On Shizune's end, he reached out to a lot of his old JP connections, and brought in Tamburello, Vanity, Kouta, Fleija, and Satine. He also stole a few members from other HNM linkshells, like Uruki from Fury, and Zumi from Dawn. Shizune stealing other linkshell members became a theme over the next few years. Valus also came over to us.

When we had enough to begin, we started by going straight after Genbu. Our very first sky run we had the items to pop for both Genbu and Suzaku, but we decided at first to simply do Genbu because the more experienced hunters like Valus didn't think we were ready to take on Suzaku.

However, once again our confidence took place. We kicked Genbu's ass, and we had the means to pop Suzaku. There was no way we were going home without at least trying!!

Thus ended the first ever official BC event. It was a tremendous success, and we were so god damn happy.

As you can see from jon's last picture, Boner had to engulf all that is me inside himself. This caused his chi blast power to skyrocket (> 9000 ) and allowed him to both destroy Kirin and avenge his parents by breaking genbu's shell with pure mystical might.


3 weeks later Alex made Boner's jaw drop by doing his chi blast damage +1000 at lvl 61.

I still never knew why you were pissed off about that. I've explained it to you like a hundred times that he didn't leech off of us, I saw him in Jeuno that day and invited him to come tag along! In fact, I remember him being slightly reluctant to come grab rank 5 with us, and I remember actually having to convince him to come. So you could say that I basically pulled him along with us so it wasn't like he was waiting in the bushes to pounce the second he heard about rank 5 happening!

CHAPTER 2 - SKY, SKY, AND MORE SKY!!

And now, the continuation!

BC had just successfully completeled its first Sky run. That night, as we all wandered back to our Mogophiles home, the high was still on. We were still patting each other on the backs, and still giving virtual high-fives, for a job well done!

During this time, we had decided to keep BC and Mogophiles separated. Reason being that a lot of us didn't want to part with our lower level friends in Mogophiles. So back at this time, BC was strictly an HNM linkshell, with people returning to their social linkshells at the end of every event. Anyone that joined BC that needed a social linkshell was given a Mogophiles pearl.

Our first sky run was smooth as can be. Our second sky run was equally awesome. We downed Seiryu and Byakko on our first try as well, and continued to do great against Genbu and Suzaku. Nothing could stop us!

But then we realized that, alas, we were only mortal. After those first two we began to make a few mistakes!!

This was our second or third Byakko, I can't remember exactly. We went in overconfident, having owned him once already! But unfortunately we were still too green, still too new at this HNM world, and were unprepared for unexpected things!

But we preservered! Throughout the month of February, we trained hard in Sky! We saved up our seals, and kept practicing on those gods!!

During this time our ranks grew. Shizune stole Cyrus from WildSeven, the three kings (Gaea, Roku, and Shadowmage) from Assassin, and probably a few more that I can't remember. He also got Manae to join our JP ranks. Jin just loved stealing those people!!

Then when March 2005 rolled around, we decided that we were ready to tackle Kirin. Yes, we may have only been in the HNM game for just slightly over a month, but god damn it, we were a talented group of fine players! So we planned it. March 12th, 2005.

The day began with a normal God run. Only this time, I came as a monk. A level 62 monk, to be exact. The only other monk in the linkshell at the time was Beorn, who was already 75. But since we wanted to play with Chi Blasting, we had me swap over too. Because it was probably more effective than my level 75 dragoon. :(

Boner and I became monk partners for the first time. It would be a beautiful friendship that would last many sky runs, as we sent /tells back and forth on what number boost we were on, to make sure we could rotate in and out of the alliance effectively to maximize damage.

With the 4 summons now down, we began to focus our attention on Kirin himself. Beorn and I kept our rotating up, and kept working at him.

Once again, we proved to ourselves that we were on our way to becomimg an awesome linkshell. We became the 4th NA linkshell on Phoenix to beat Kirin, I believe, with only WildSeven, Dawn, and Genesis beating us out. But given that at the time they were far older than us, we didn't feel one bit bad about that at all. We did it before even some linkshells older than us got to doing it, like 13 and Assassin.

We were again so proud of ourselves for stepping up. Not bad for a linkshell under 6 weeks old, huh?

It was interesting to note the time it took us to win that KS99. 26 minutes, 57 seconds. A mere 3 minutes and 3 seconds away from a loss. Nowadays we win in like 5 or 6 minutes, but back then, we were amazed to even pull this kind of a victory out of our ass. We did 4 runs that day.

This linkshell has shown that not only could we be thrown into a new situation and emerge triumphant, but we can improve vastly on it with repeat runs. We were showing to be very adaptable.

Between the months of April and June, we stole even more members from other HNM linkshells.

I believe we got Izzy from Dawn, Naiku from Dawn, Gemineye from 13, Dragonwarrior from 13, Fatman, Radav and Cyrus from WildSeven, and I believe Flarne from Fury.

It was great. At this time, we were still unknown in the HNM world. Everytime there was a post on KI or Alla where HNM linkshells and their respective drama was involved, nobody ever mentioned BC on any HNM linkshell lists. We were still the new kids. But we knew we had something great. We knew we were going to rock.

During this time some other HNM linkshells began to set their sights higher. They began looking toward some other HNMs, ones that have not been killed yet on the server. I'm talking about the CoP Wyrms such as Tiamat, Jormungund, and Vrtra. Well, we wanted in on that action as well. We began planning. We began scheming. We discussed it day in and day out on the old pezzie forums, that only a few of you here have probably ever seen.

During May of 2005, we had a small get-together down in Los Angeles for e3. Tati (Harmonia), Carmen (Carmisse), Jin (Shizune), Alex (Freja), Ray (Rayj), Mike (Orochinagi), and Tyler (Juma) were there. Kasin (Peachfuzz) and Joe (Coraan) also met up with us there.

It was the first "big" BC meetup. It spanned for a few days, and we went out and had a great time. e3 was awesome, and our friendship grew stronger! Also, I have a few pictures from this event if people are really interested, but I can't really post them on the public page. WE ALL REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME WE DID THAT!

At the meetup, we decided that when the trip was over, we were going to focus full time on Tiamat. Not an easy task, considering the fact that we have never even so much as killed a Fafnir before at the time. We knew we needed the Wyrm practice.

Then we got lucky. One night, on my way to one of my EXP parties on MNK, we decided to go to Dragon's Aery to work on spiders. The front end was already taken, so we decided to go to the back end. While passing through the pit, we saw a JP linkshell slowly killing Nidhogg. Finally, an opportunity for BC! We noted the ToD, and then came back the next day. As luck would have it, that JP linkshell was not camping anymore, having already down Nidhogg.

We were lucky and scored 4 uncontested Fafnirs in a row, before any competition finally started showing up. But it was important. The runs were good practice, and prepared us for the next step.

We already knew many linkshells were trying their hands at Tiamat. However, we also knew that none had been successful. We've seen Genesis try, we've seen WildSeven try, and we've seen 13 try. Next was our turn.

CHAPTER 4 - WHERE THE HELL IS MY CHAPTER 4???

Previously, on THE HISTORY OF BURNINGCOSMOSSSS...

























I don't remember. Damn thing was too long ago.

Hey guys, I have to wait until freaking NEXT JANUARY until the next episode of Battlestar Galactica comes out. 3 month gap is nothing!


Anyway, last time I promised to go through the Tiamat fight. June 17th, 2005. I can say, without a doubt, that the first Tiamat fight BC underwent was the one fight in my entire FFXI career that I will never, ever forget.

Why, you ask?

Well, simply because there is no other term for it than EPIC.

Now, I'm not using that term lightly. You need to understand some things that went on before we entered the fight.

1.) During this time in Phoenix history, many other linkshells were in a race to see which linkshell would become the first English speaking linkshell to down Tiamat, or any CoP wyrm for that matter.

There have been many other attempts in the past, even before several team ups. I remember hearing about WildSeven, Genesis, 13, Assassins, and several others attempt this fight, yet they could barely make a scratch on it. So of course, this left us entering the fight with a sense of doubt. We knew that, in all likelihood, we were going to fail. This was our first time fighting a grand Wyrm, and even then our overall Wyrm experience at the time had been limited to 3 Fafnirs or so.

Of course, we were determined to not go down so easily.

2.) We were still unknown at this time. The new kids on the block. Just in the HNM business for under 6 months. Dawn and WildSeven have been around a while by then, and even the other large newer linkshells, 13, Genesis, and Assassins, have been around longer than we have. All of our accomplishments by this time, no matter how fast we've done them, have just been things others in the NA community have accomplished several times over. So we decided to attempt to do something to really stand out.

Now, why was this the one fight that we would never forget?

True, it was our first time fighting a greater Wyrm. We gathered together at the Tiamat site, staring the dragon down, knowing full well that we were most likely going to get our asses handed to us. All we knew that this was going to be an insanely glorious battle.

And so, we begin.

The fight was much tougher than we expected. At this time, we had absolutely no information about grand Wyrms. There was nothing substantial that we could find on the internet. The few linkshells on other servers that have beaten it were keeping suspiciously quiet about the strategies that they used to win the fight. So it was up to us to test anything and everything we could think of to throw into this fight.

From what I could remember about this fight, here is what we had:

Tanks: We used 2 PLD/NINs, and 1 NIN/WAR as the main tank. The PLD/NINs were there to support the NIN. PLD/NINs at this time was a mostly undeveloped job, and so mostly did not know or understand how to properly hold hate as a main tank. We therefore used them as a support tank, covering the NIN in times of need.

Damage Dealers: The bulk of the damage came from two summoners, Harmonia and Izzy. Myself, I was a Monk at the time, coming in for Chi Blast every 3 minutes as well.

Black Mages: We did NOT use Black Mages as damage dealers at this time. We tried it, but when we saw how resisted magic damage was, we decided to hold them back. It was a dumb choice now, looking back, but again, we had no references to draw from on this fight. We kept the BLMs rotated in for stuns, and they were mostly adds control for the bulk of the fight.

Tiamat stayed at above 95% HP for the first two hours. Two hours of us figuring out the best way of damaging her, with most of our ideas flopping madly. Summoners finally got into a rhythm, and we were finally starting to make progress after a while. Past the 70% mark, we were already insanely proud of ourselves, having taken Tiamat down past what anyone else save Feather was able to do by that time.

Tiamat continued being a tough bitch. We kept on running into snags, and had to sleep her again and again. The damage came around slowly, but surely.

That last picture was around where we almost lost the fight. We had taken Tiamat down to around the 20% mark, when she started to go crazy. Nobody knew by that time just how insane a low HP Tiamat would be. She began double attacking more, and attacking faster. Our tanks weren't able to keep shadows up, hate started getting out of control, and our entire alliance nearly wiped.

Tiamat regened during this time from about 20% to 40%, if I remember correctly. It was disheartening to see our work being taken away, and of course, we were afraid we were going to lose the fight. However, it's been said, that if there was one talent that BC has above anyone else in this game, it's in recovering. We've recovered from many fights in this game that most others would have considered a lost and given up, despite heavy odds. Well, this was one shining example on how good we are at recovering. People reraised, others were raised. Some of us, myself included, were sacrificed and zombied to keep Tiamat from becoming unclaimed and REALLY start ticking HP back up. It was an incredible moment, but eventually, the mages got to sleep Tiamat again long enough for everyone else to unweak and recover.

Then we took control of the situation again, and never lost control.

Later on, friends from other linkshells that watched the fight said that they were sure we had lost the fight at this point. Most of the alliance had wiped, and Tiamat was completely out of control, chomping down on tanks and mages alike. They told me that it was nothing short of a miracle we were able to pull this off, but we knew that we had the determination to do it.

The fight was so god damn incredible.

Earlier in this post I referred to it as EPIC. That is, I believe, an accurate description. The fight itself took just a little over 9 HOURS to end. All I remember by the end of the night was being incredibly hungry, tired, and needing to pee really badly.

We had one EU member go to sleep shortly after the fight started, and when he woke up, WE WERE STILL FIGHTING. He was shocked.

We had our tanks come dangerously close to running out of ninja tools, so we had to have members bring in supplies from Jeuno. And they didn't exactly bring in very little to begin with.

It was the most intense experience in my FFXI career, and I was so, so proud of my linkshell and my friends that day. We've done what no other NAs were able to do at the time, and we've done it on our first try. And for heaven's sake, we did it with STYLE. Nobody else on the server can claim to have the fight we did.

Later on others criticised us for taking too long. Well to those I say PISS OFF. I'm proud it took us that long. There was so much energy in the linkshell. So much determination. The will to even sit through a 9 hour fight, to try theory and experimentation on how to fight it the best. We pioneered Wyrms for the NAs on Phoenix, and we're damn proud of it. Later on we've taken down Tiamat with as few as 16 people, and when we have over 25 we can easily do it in an hour now, but nothing will beat the sheer exhiliration of our first struggle against the red bitch.

It was a good time to be in BurningCosmosss.
