Cappadocia is in the heart of Turkey. I had a chance to visit once, but had to decline since it would've been a little too taxing on my finances. Apparently, during the religious persecution in the 7th and 8th centuries, huge underground cities were carved out of the soft sandstone and used as hiding places for Orthodox Christians. The distinctive pillars are formed due to the hard lava rock capping each formation, with the soft rock beneath eroded away by the elements.
