Since there's a thread about it, I may as well post my problem. XD This issue has been going on forever, and I'm not sure how to fix it. I have a 2wire brand wireless router that doesn't seem to want to communicate with my laptop.

Its really strange, my laptop can pick up the wireless connections of my neighbors, and any other wireless connection I take it around. One of my neighbors (The one below me) Has the exact same type of modem, and my laptop picks it up every time 100%. But for some reason it has trouble sensing my own wireless connection, it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for it to pick it up... and when it does, it doesn't seem to want to stay connected. I think the longest time in history I've had it connect is 2 hours (Which means its not incompatible).

Judging from above, you would think its a problem with the modem... but it actually isn't. My PSP could connect to it easilly and instantly every time, as can my cousin's Xbox 360, and my brother's laptop. For them it always shows 100% /all/ the time.

I'm not sure if I messed up some setting on my laptop or what... Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Hmm, in an interesting turn of events my connection starts to work 100% again out of the blue. And I only made one change to my computer.... uninstalled norton anti-virus. Don't ask me why, but for soem reason after removing it, it works all of a sudden. <.< wtf.

That is kinda strange, but not completely shocking lol. Any time you disable something that interferes with a connection or has the potential to (which it probably was doing), you're more likely to fix things.

problem solved!

How did you fix it? I have I think the same damn router and my ps3 disconnects like every 30 seconds. I haven't even been able to get it to stay connected long enough to register my name with the ps3 store thingie. I'm trying to use it through wire-less.

Whatever you did spread the love so I can play Resistance online! :P

ewe, no thanks. I've got the wep key into the system but for some reason I just keep getting dropped from the network. There's too many people in this area that have wireless, not interested in giving someone free net.

under the security settings, there should be a spot for mac addresses & an option to allow all or restrict access

restrict access & enter the mac address on the allow list, that should do it
in my case, network adaptor mac

that's what i did along with disabling wep

there's also a spot where you can see who is accessing your signal & it'll show their mac, put that in the mac filter page to block them

um you can also change what channel your wireless network is on.. default is 11 (no one changes it so there is a lot of mix up with wireless). Each channel different frequency so it improves it. Try doing that if you keep disconnecting. And also some gaming systems require that for specific routers you need to change the wireless transfer rate. Like the NDS lite requires me to transfer at 1-2 mbps instead of default rate.. its weird

Where I live like hardely anyone even has a computer, so I have 0 security on my router and nobody ever leech off of it.

If you using wep you have to make sure every single character is right or it won't work. My ps3 connected wireless fine, but then again I don't have any security on my router. Even FFXI which wasn't designed for wireless plays fine with the wireless adaptor.

If your ps3 won't stay connected it could be too far from the router. Its really hard to tell what the problem it is without seeing it.

When ever someone has computer problems if I can see it I usaully can figure it out right away.

Just setting a MAC filter is hardly any kind of security. It's waaaaaaay easy to spoof a MAC address, and only marginally more difficult to find out what MAC address your wireless card is using in the first place.

If your connection fails when WEP is enabled, then either something is wrong with your router (bad firmware, bad hardware, implementation of wifi doesn't play nice with the connecting device's implementation of wifi) or the same kinds of things are wrong with your connecting device (ps3, wifi adapter for ps2, whatever).

well, this is as secure as i care to make it until i get a new computer, then i won't have a need for this router anymore

mac filters are working fine so far, not getting r0 every minute like i used to
